The Great Fayre and Fowl Weekly Trivia Night by Nny

Aziraphale and Crowley had taken to meeting at the Fayre and Fowl sometime in the late 1800s. Back then it was only once every couple of years, of course, just to check in and make sure everything was nicely balanced. Couldn't be having with the Great Forces being out of whack. Sometime in the '20s and '30s it'd picked up a little, commiseration over the bastard nature of the race with which they'd both fallen a little in love.

In the 1950s they'd realised that inadvertently, it'd become a monthly meeting that both showed up to without having to plan. They'd fallen out over rock'n'roll in 1956, and the monthly silences had become just about unbearable by the time 1959 rolled around, so Crowley had indulged in a moment of Inspiration for the landlord of the pub. Shortly thereafter, the Great Fayre & Fowl Weekly Trivia Night was born.

And once a month from that point on, Aziraphale and Crowley were kings.

Everything you know is wrong by meltingpenguins

'You know how on the telly such parties usually end with everyone becoming what they were dressed as, if it's a remotely supernatural show? Imagine that would happen now.'

When Crowley muses this during a fancy costume party, he hadn't expected it to not take long for him and Aziraphale to not even have to imagine what a mess it would be. Especially since demon and angel had dressed up as an angel and a demon.

[abandoned work. Really, it doesn't exactly stand on its own, so it shouldn't be on the list, but it's still a very fun little story if you don't mind it being unresolved]

With a Whimper by jane_potter *** (Crossover with Supernatural)

Say what you like about the nature of demons, but Crowley's always been an optimist. Not hopeful, exactly, just... keen on the future. Even though right now it looks like there might not be much of that left to come-- well, hey, that's what they said a decade ago, right?

But even Crowley thinks that it's a sad state of affairs when angels start falling for trying to save the world. There's one on his bed right now, two steps from human and two bottles past tipsy. (Crowley/Castiel)

While Shepherds Washed Their Socks By Night by TardisIsTheOnlyWayToTravel (Crossover with Supernatural)

Everything you know is wrong
by meltingpenguins

'You know how on the telly such parties usually end with everyone becoming what they were dressed as, if it's a remotely supernatural show? Imagine that would happen now.'

When Crowley muses this during a fancy costume party, he hadn't expected it to not take long for him and Aziraphale to not even have to imagine what a mess it would be. Especially since demon and angel had dressed up as an angel and a demon.

[abandoned work. Really, it doesn't exactly stand on its own, so it shouldn't be on the list, but it's still a very fun little story if you don't mind it being unresolved]

I found this quiz here https://astolat.dreamwidth.org/311865.html & I thought cool, so I tried it. It might have missed some things but I thought at least the top rankings were pretty accurate for me:

(1) Fairytale/Mythology AU
(1) Characters Swap Roles AU
(1) Body Swapping
(1) Supernatural Creature/Human Romance
(5) Everyone is Evil/Mirrorverse AU
(5) Amnesia Fic
(5) Groundhog Day Loop
(5) Loyalty Kink
(9) Royals/Political Marriage Turns Into Feelings
(9) Reincarnation/'25 Lives' AU
(9) Magical Connection (Telepathy, etc)
(12) Snowed In Cabin/Isolated Together for Extended Period of Time
(12) Selfcest (Possibly Due to Time Travel)
(15) Seemingly Unrequited Pining
(15) Polyamory
(15) Found Families

I thought I'd try to match this up to see how many of these tropes I'd written for + rec some fics of those tropes I particularly like + canon that has those elements in it (but I only did a few because I always forget how time-consuming making rec-lists is)

<as always, check individual stories for ratings/warnings>

(1) Fairytale/Mythology AU
fic I wrote: "The Good Brother" is a Black Butler/Hansel & Gretel retelling. I really enjoyed creating the world for this story!
rec: "I dreamt of magpies" (Thor) by saaifione / really sad.
canon: Thor (MCU)/Norse Mythology, Labyrinth, Howl's Moving Castle

(1) Characters Swap Roles AU
fic I wrote: "In the Wake of Summer" Thor & Loki, pre-Thor AU, pretty tragic
rec: "the muse in my head" by deadcellredux \ honestly this one's more role-play than role-reversal AU. I feel like there are fics I know of that fit the trope better but right now I can't *find* any...

(1) Body Swapping
fic I wrote: I think I've never actually written anything for this trope? Which is crazy, because it's my #1 favorite ever
rec: "Just Like Any Other Day" by elandrialore (Smallville); thoughtful, fun // - now I've never actually watched Smallville, except for a few episodes, but this is Clark and Lex and Lois probably post-series-ish AU & "Postcards from the Extraterrestrial Highway" by DiscordantWords (X-Files); dark in an X-Files kind of way [I should just make a full body-swap reclist honestly]
canon: Quantum Leap!

(1) Supernatural Creature/Human Romance
fic I wrote: "Moving the Stars" (Labyrinth) Jareth/Sarah ... although there's a twist here that the supernatural creature *isn't*, really, and the human has magic...
canon: Supernatural, Artemis Fowl

(5) Everyone is Evil/Mirrorverse AU
fic I wrote: nothing? huh! At least that I can recall (bar an unfinished TNG fic involving Data going into the Mirror Universe)
rec: "A Good Look in the Mirror" by Rabble Rouser / TOS fic with believable Mirror!Kirk characterization that makes him more complex than just evil

(5) Groundhog Day Loop
fic I wrote: "Storm Signals" - Batjokes
rec: "It Might Have Been" by Unforgotten [WIP] X-Men Movies - this one is the "repeating lives" type / & "A Day With No Regrets" by Mithen (Batman/Superman) - a rare happy version of this trope!
canon: Groundhog Day :)

I'll probably make longer reclists based on some of these things at a later point ...

In which I attempt to compile every single story in the fandom… because of Danger Man’s relation to The Prisoner, a lot of these fics may reference the other series. I try to mention it, but I may forget, especially if it’s not a big part of the story.

*=personal favorite

DANGER MAN/SECRET AGENT

1. “In Spite of All the Danger” by JulietBurke007 (unfinished)

Summary: The adventures of John Drake before he became Danger Man or The Prisoner. This reluctant spy must deal with ruthless criminals, clandestine operations, and his own tumultuous life in order to prevent the Cold War from erupting into an inferno.

(Summary of the story as written) During WWII, young pilot/spy John Drake gets shot down on a mission and coordinates an escape with his fellow prisoners.

It’s got an interesting plot with some twists and is, happily, a little longer than the other stories for this fandom, at four chapters.

2. “That’s One of the Nice Things About Me” by Mneme.miny.moe

Summary: Glimpses of what life is like when one is the best agent in M9.

A short drabble series of scenes that might have taken place during the show.

3. “The Wayward” by Mneme.miny.moe (unfinished)

Summary: For three years, Violeta Gabor has managed a covert operators’ support outpost, only miles away from the Iron Curtain. But the station, disguised as a little travelers’ inn, has outlived its usefulness and must be closed down - or has it?

(Summary of the story as written) Violeta and Drake meet and have a short conversation in code as he checks into the inn. It’s a fun, intriguing scene, that works well on its own & doesn’t necessarily read as unfinished - except for the fact that the last word of the last sentence is almost certainly missing.

4. “The Parallel Lines Sometimes Meet Affair” * [Danger Man/Man from U.N.C.L.E crossover] by theladyrose

John Drake teams up with two spies on a mission to learn more about a new technology that could be helpful to the intelligence community. Modern AU, three chapters. Has a nice narrative style and fun dialogue; but focuses only on the set-up of the case.

5. “The Village Affair” * by Eliann_SleepingCat [The Prisoner/The Man From U.N.C.L.E. crossover]

The plan is: go in, free Drake. In the Village, nothing is ever that simple.

This is technically a Prisoner fic (with spoilers for the whole series), but 6/Drake’s backstory/Danger Man is an integral part of the plot as it goes forward. Multi-chapter! :) A great plot-focused story with an unexpectedly powerful ending. The worldbuilding backstory/characterization was unique and interesting.

6. “Secret Agent Man” part 1, 2, and 3 by Jude-Marian

John Drake on a case.

It’s written like an episode of the series, very plot-heavy.

7. “The Typical Conversation of John Drake” by Sonia34

Parody/drabble. :)

8. “A Man’s Best friend Is…” [Danger Man/The Prisoner crossover] by Jude-Marian

Drabble. John Drake thinks he sees something very strange…

9. “Danger Man: Carnival” by Jude-Marian

Drake and his friend Dr Seltzman spring a trap. Written like an episode.

10. “To John Drake” by Jude-Marian

Drake stops an assassination.

11. “Danger Man: ‘Georgio’” part 1, 2 by Jude-Marian

In which Drake is outwitted.

12. “Danger Man: ‘Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers’” by Jude-Marian

Drake is sent on a mission to recover a lost drone.

13. “Danger Man: ‘Vogelverschrikker of Romney Marsh’” [Danger Man/The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh …crossover?] by Jude Marian

Drake is sent to save the life of a Dutch politician.

14. “Golden Boys” * [Danger Man/James Bond crossover 1] by possiblie

“I think James and John were in charm school together. some people’d joke that the recruiting agents must have a fetish for golden boys, and then there were other, less wise classmates that said John was kept around for spares.”

This is actually a headcanon and not a fic, but it’s the kind of headcanon that feelslike a fic. It doesn’t actually have a title, the title here in quotes is what I gave it to differentiate it from the next one.

15. “James and John” * [Danger Man/James Bond crossover 2] by possiblie

Unlike the other two headcanons by possiblie, this one has less of a story feel, it’s more like a bunch of scene-snippits put together.

16. “The Old Guard” * [Danger Man/James Bond crossover 3; references to The Prisoner] by possiblie

“James is not sentimental about loss.”

Again, another headcanon that’s just titled here for reference.

17. “The Cold” * by eponymous_rose

“From time to time, even John Drake feels the chill.”

This story is wonderful. It perfectly gets the atmosphere of the series and it’s beautifully character-focused.

It’s also written to lead up to The Prisoner, (and is probably better read having seen the other series) with some references near the end of the story.

18. “Drake’s Women” * by Praxus Goforth

Summary: A look at the women in Drake’s life.

Humor. Not what it seems like from the summary :) Absolutely lovely narration and a wonderful little storyline. If you need a fic to cheer you up from all the depressing stuff, this is it.

These are some of the Black Butler stories that I really like :) All pairings/genres. It’s so hard to find good longfics by just searching, so I thought I’d share some of my favorites. See individual stories for ratings/warnings. Everything here is complete.

Arrow by itszapah
From a young age, Lau has always stood out as a charming yet cunning boy. Using this to his advantage, he plays the world around him to always get what he wants, even when he has nothing. He ends up balancing a double life on the two extreme sides of society, but it doesn’t come without consequence.
This story tells of Lau’s growing up; it’s a great & interesting look at the character, as well as having some action (more as the story goes along.)

As You Wish by Yuri_MoonFire12
Fifty years have passed since Ciel was forever changed to an immortal demon and in that time Sebastian has grown to hate him, himself and the ties that bind them together. However, Ciel does not feel the same way and wishes to correct the cards of fate they have been dealt.
In which Ciel & Sebastian finally get over things and live evilly-ever-after. Pretty happy, all things considered. This is the shortest story on the list, but I decided to put it here because it reads like a longer story.

Crescendo by BlackInkStains
As the melody dances through the painted labyrinth alone, many hands reach out to lure it into certain danger. Only one among them can lead it into safety. Or, at least, to safety on time. Modern Artist AU
This story is utterly amazing, with an almost magical-realism feel. It’s written in a very plot-driven mystery style, with only very slight focus on the pairing, and has a multitude of characters, twists, and turns. One of my favorite things about this story is the way it manages to write a human Sebastian that still keeps a lot of the eerie, non-human qualities of canon Sebastian, and how this is incorporated into his backstory and his ambiguous “curse”… I’ve also *never* seen a story with an Ash Landers that is this perfectly IC and creepy. This is definitely worth reading even if you’re not into sebaciel.

Devilish Impulses by KittyGetsLoose
He impulsively broke the covenant, then remade it. But can the trust, once shattered, be recovered? Sebastian must work twice as hard to rebuild what he briefly discarded.
This is one of my top 3 favorite sebaciel stories (by which I mean stories where that’s the focus, not where it’s just in it a bit). Amazing wordbuilding, a great plot & character development. It got a little bit too sweet for me at moments, mostly later on, but kept everyone IC… if you want a fic where Sebastian & Ciel get an actually happy ending that is believable, (and the ending is *amazing*) this is the one.

Or, The Lady Knight. At sixteen, Lizzy Middleford has been on a tour of the continent for a year. Now, she’s a different, sharper person than before…and she’s determined to take her place at Ciel’s side, whether he likes it or not. All hail the Queen’s Paladin.
Literally the most awesome Lizzy fic ever. I really can’t say how amazing this is. It has a wonderful, nuanced depiction of all the characters, and an incredible plot. It feels like a historical fiction with plenty of steampunk and action.

Etch the Pain by Gambitgirl
When the demon’s lips first touched his young lord’s flesh and black tipped fingers slid along that young cheek, cool and smooth as marble, the demon mourned how dull his existence would become in the next moment. Yes, he would be sated, he would thrive on this soul for centuries, perhaps a millennia or more. But… Ciel Phantomhive’s existence would become mere footnote in the history of the world.
What a luminous little scribble he had been!

This is one of my top 3 favorite sebaciel stories (by which I mean stories where that’s the focus, not where it’s just in it a bit). Somewhat dark, mutual obsession & hate but definitely no romance

Eudemon Everlasting by tayziconable
Nearly a year after Ciel’s transition into a demon, he and Sebastian fulfill their first new contract together. However, their feelings alter slightly in their time together, in ways they never deemed possible, and on top of it, Sebastian discovers a very unorthodox method of tasting Ciel’s soul.
A fun plotline that sometimes veers slightly too much into romance for my taste, but makes it all work by the fact that everything is so IC. Not particularly angsty, but with a lot of humor, especially in the dialogue, which is the best rendition of Sebastian & Ciel’s banter I’ve ever seen. Plus you can’t miss the absolutely interesting, gross, and unique account of Sebastian teaching Ciel the finer points of how to eat souls.

Inertia Creeps by Cennis
If everyone but you believes you’re mad, who is wrong? Ciel Phantomhive, patient D18, is not mad. Sebastian Michaelis, new orderly at St. Victoria’s Asylum, agrees. Eventual light Sebastian x Ciel, AU.
This is an incredible story. But it’s very, very dark - though at first (like Sebastian) you don’t realize what you are getting into. It’s an ensemble piece, though Sebastian & Ciel’s arc is the focal point, and multiple characters have great arcs. It’s got a lot of violence and is incredibly intense and honestly disturbed me, probably more than any Black Butler fic I’ve ever read. One of the things the author managed to pull off incredibly was to keep everyone, and their dynamics, IC while moving them to this human, no-powers AU, but the fact that everyone is human makes it only more disturbing… and that’s not even getting into the horror of the place itself.

Lay Me to Rest by BlackInkStains
Almost one and a half centuries after Ciel’s death, Sebastian returns to London where he and Ciel meet again. How is it that his former master is still alive when Sebastian himself devoured his soul many years ago?
Undertaker is a pretty major character in this, as is the curious relationship between him and Ciel, and Ronald has a great cameo as well. But the most interesting part of this story, to me, was the “unfinished” contract between Ciel and Sebastian, and way the power dynamics between them were flipped around a bit, and constantly being tested. It’s surprisingly sweet, as well as haunting. But fair warning, this ends tragically.

Nevermore by BtchesLoveCannons
Ciel is adopted by the Phantomhives at the age of thirteen after being raised an orphan. He soon learns the family has dark secrets and the butler is more than he seems. Also, the butler seems to have taken an interest in him that isn’t completely innocent.
I particularly liked the Grell plotline in this story.

Stain the Water Clear by objectlesson
The wind may come and scatter ash, but Sebastian is the fire. He will keep burning, and Ciel will continue to smolder beneath him, until kingdom come.
This is one of my top 3 favorite sebaciel stories (by which I mean stories where that’s the focus, not where it’s just in it a bit). I love how this fic features a Sebastian who is really alien and sees the world incredibly differently than a human would. Though it’s his pov, it’s really a coming-of-age story for Ciel. Fairly dark. For this Sebastian, “love” can be both twisted, and corrupting, but also transcendent and sublime. There are no paradoxes for him, in anything. He destroys what he loves, and he loves in destroying. Ciel is caught up in this and as he tries to make sense of his life, he changes from a boy to a bitter young man with a worldview inextricably influenced by Sebastian.

The Secret Name by smilingcrescent
Ciel never revealed himself as the Queen’s Guard Dog, even to the underworld. Instead, under Sebastian’s influence and an array of persona, he searches, ever more desperately for a way to get revenge and extend his contract. The contract, after all, ends 6 years from that day… If he can get Sebastian’s Secret Name, he may have a chance to live. Modern AU.
This is an interesting concept that plays out really well, with an almost fairytale-ish feel. The way the modern-day setting changed and affected the basic plotline, and the incorporation of minor characters in unexpected ways, especially Alois, made this particularly fun. Very slight ship, mostly plot-focused.

To My Own Little Boy by KuroFan4235
A series of anonymous gifts and strange goings-on take place while Ciel is ill. How will Sebastian and Ciel handle this new mystery?
In which yet another creep displays too much of an interest in Ciel—in fact, he’s laboring under the delusion that Ciel is his son—only this time, Sebastian isn’t able to so easily save him. With Ciel kidnapped and Sebastian gravely injured, and the addition of an unknown demon whose motives are opaque, there’s nothing else for Sebastian and Ciel to do but play the long game.
This is a suspense story that is almost sickeningly tense at times; and it does something rarely seen with having even Sebastian set against a situation where he’s helpless. It’s almost impossible to put down, and the story takes a twist near the end that I’ve never seen in any other story. If you want a gen but very Sebastian & Ciel-centric, plotty story, where they have to match their wits against staggering odds, this story is for you.
